(Reagan Magabane at December 15, 2016 11:23 am)
Do you think people can look past these differences in faith?
(Anna at December 15, 2016 11:26 am)
Moslems want to have many beards because of their reliogion and christians do not want to keep on many beards, so you find that they will hate each other.

Religion has brought division amnong people because there is no unity at all because we pray from different places, this doesnt mean we are united but rather we are divided. So religion has divided people so much’
(Obbo Steven(Uganda) at December 15, 2016 11:31 am)
Religion has never united people. It only brings hatred because others come with their intentions.

What about Buddhism? Buddhism is supposed to promote peace
(Anonymous at December 15, 2016 12:23 pm)
I dont think because most people even fear the religion of buddhism
(OmalUgnada) at December 15, 2016 12:52 pm)
Why do people fear buddhism?
(Anonymous at December 15, 2016 1:01 pm)
I’m sure Christians would remove their shoes if they entered a mosque. This is to do with respect, not religion
(Anna at December 15, 2016 1:02 pm)
I think religion has a good purpose to link people in peace, but in reality there is the risk to create unions between who believes in it, but divide whose don’t believe in God. I think that religion can be a good thing when it is open to different views and collaborate with them in a common process of growth.

If education can include the idea that many people like to have a faith and although the faiths may be different, it is important we show respect for them.

This question relates to the philosophical Problem of Evil. If there is so much evil and suffering in the world, how can we justify the claim that there is a God? Some say it is because we need suffering to develop ourselves. Others say it’s because God has a plan for us and those that suffer will receive happiness in Heaven. However, is this really enough for people who experience suffering on a day-to-day basis, whether it is in war, through illness and so forth?

i think religion was made up by people to control others
(harry at December 15, 2016 12:56 pm)
I think it’s very easy for some to say that it will all be worthwhile when you get to Heaven, but that’s coming from a very privileged point of view where we could never, ever understand how much suffering some people go through
(Anonymous at December 15, 2016 12:56 pm)
Yes. But some poor people who suffer a lot are the most religious of all. How do we explain this?
(Elle at December 15, 2016 12:57 pm)
Religion is both unity and divisive; but I dont entirely blame the division on it but to people who believe in different religions. People kill each other in the name of religion or do a lot of atrocities in the name of religion. For example in Islam; you know I’m a Muslim, but in the Quran there’s no script that orders or tells muslims to kill other people or themselves if not in defence for an attack by someone else. Therefore, religion’s initial intention is to unite not to divide people. Thank you!!
(ibra at December 15, 2016 12:58 pm)
Could we say people are to blame for all the suffering because of religion that it tell us to be patient God has a plan

Religion encourages people to be a better version of themselves and helps them to be part of a community. It needs to be open and allow people to question, debate and develop themselves. However it is often misunderstood and misinterpreted to suit peoples own aims. Religion itself is not what is at fault- but the people who use it to promote division and to justify terrible acts like war.

I like this. It is very sad when religion is used to build walls and create division. I wonder what God thinks when he looks at the people he created and sees what they are doing in his name.
(JoSheffield at December 15, 2016 11:52 am)
Its true Nicola because religion some times has no room for people to to always be inquisitive in that if one inquires a lot, he or she is either chased out of church or mosque because the religious leaders most of them think that the people they lead have to be submissive in all they ideas that they bring to the places of worship.

However much its only one God that we all believe in, people understand Him differently to the extent that they abuse each other and in so doing, they end up abusing one another and forgetting that God is for us all so we all have to be together and think together.

James 1:27 (NIV) ”Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” A summary of a ’purely motivated’ religion, in its proper context, doesn’t get much better than. 😉 ’Religions’ are just ’labels’…. What draws people together, or drives them apart, are attitudes of heart and mind. As a Christian, I have friends that are Islamic… I love them for who they are. But, in love for them, I also hope to ’win some’ for the gospel.

When people become too religious, it brings division because people of the same religion will love each other more by giving support, employment opportunities to people of same religion however those who are of other religion will not get opportunity to be employed, i have seen this happening in the country where i live.So religion creates division among people.
(Alfred (Uganda) at December 14, 2016 2:43 pm)
How is it both it must be having at least one thing…
(ibra(Ug) at December 15, 2016 11:00 am)
I think that it can work both ways. Certainly amongst people of the same religion, where they have something very important to them in common, it is a unifier. There have definitely been times for me, when it meetings with people of the same religion as me, when I have been amazed at how well people of got on together despite coming from many different backgrounds and having widely different lifestyles etc. With different religions it can obviously be a source of division between people, especially if one of the religions seeks to stress the differences between people rather than focusing on bridging the gaps!
(Clive at December 15, 2016 11:11 am)
There have been many cases in the community where Christians have conflicted with other religions or faiths. This gives me the impression that the two cannot be one though we worship one god.
(Sam at December 15, 2016 11:31 am)
My experience when me and my family have been in need is that the people in our church have been the ones who have helped us and walked with us along our difficult journey. Church has been the place where I have found community, and where others have come, been accepted and found community. But I also understand the person who has commented above. We need to make sure that we extend that love and community beyond the boundaries of our church to all those in need. Sometimes it happens really well, and sometimes it doesn’t.

Religion unifies a group and distinguishes it from the others. It is possible to develop a dialogue between different religious groups, and to have exchanges and respect, but unity cannot be achieved through religions, because in the same concept of religion there is the concept of division and superiority. Religions are an obstacles to equality. It is possible to work against inequality not “thanks to religions”, but “despite religions”.

I think religion does both at the same time, to different groups of people. The feeling of union and belonging religion can create is something special and powerful in the life of many, it can bring out the best in us and help us live our lives more generously… but if distorted it can also cause division and resentment towards who’s outside our comfort zone, towards the ones who are strangers to us and therefore we do not know. If we are all capable of letting behind us this “my God is bigger than your God” attitude, I think religion could help us connect with others in a deep and truthful way.

I think it depend on how a person decides to practice its own religion. Every religion talks about loving the other and be respectful, helping people and not being selfish. In this sense, religion can bring people together. However, sometimes people interpret religion in a way that may cause harm to others, for instance this is what happens with extremism and terrorism.

I had a really interesting debate with someone the other day, who said that atheism is also a faith and thus a religion. How do you define faith, and how do you define religion? I think atheism is a faith because there is no evidence that God isn’t real and no evidence He is. Thus, an atheist is putting their trust in their belief and science which suggests He isn’t real. However, I’m not sure it is a religion.
