Reality is we have all lived on the foundation of traditional values which are better modernity is just to speed up things
(Mukisa(Uganda) at February 11, 2017 9:51 am)
I don’t think the answer is clear cut…it’s open to debate
(So good ventures at February 14, 2017 1:56 pm)
i think modern values are good to follow or to know about, if you wanne use them then you can choose if you want to. Traditional cultures ar also good to know. I think that if you mix those two is the best way.
(Patricia at February 23, 2017 11:13 am)
modernity has improved on the means of transport and this has increased on how often people meet their friends unlike the traditional cultures where people could rearly visit their friends because poor transport.
(jimmy (uganda) at February 23, 2017 11:22 am)
Modern vallues are better, because when somebody is in Kampala and you are not, you can call.
(ibra (Uganda) at February 23, 2017 11:25 am)
yes they are good and hope we are going into a better life, therefore, modern values are improving our world and not the traditional culture, for they just pull us backwards.
(brain (Uganda) at February 23, 2017 11:32 am)
modern values are better. because now you can use taxi and boda boda. In the history you don’’t have those things. Also you have money these days what you need to survive.
(ibra (Uganda) at February 23, 2017 11:35 am)
I disagree that money is a good part of modernity – I think that it has only brought problems to our world and divided us into rich and poor based on money not the hard work that we do
(DJ Cool Kenya at February 23, 2017 12:00 pm)
true money brought problems however it encourages hard work
(mukose paulo(uganda) at February 23, 2017 12:45 pm)
the two are good if they can work hand in hand but on the side of modernity it has brought women emancipation and this has helped women to know their rights and has also increased on their self esteem unlike the traditional cultures where women were always left at home only to do domestic work.
(brenda (uganda) at February 23, 2017 12:57 pm)
there should be an amulgation of both cultures in one way or another

What are modern values? What are traditional ones? Are some societies more modern or traditional than others?

Great question, but difficult to answer! I think all societies face this with each new age cohort and changes in technology that expose many more cultures to each other. This can be seen in second generation immigrants in merging their more traditional cultures from their parents and adopting new ones they are surrounded by in the dominant culture. It is hard to untangle or ascribe a valuation on this because each situation is different. I think the traditional cultures face challenges in being ‘stomped out’ by more modern and ‘appealing’ cultures such as America, which causes tensions in the world. Jillian

I think both traditional and modern values are both important in that they have to move together as the traditional values emphasize discipline as the core value and its the only thing that can maintain morals in society. this therefore means that the modern values have to implement on this but this is sometimes not the case because of too much permissiveness in the modern life.

What do you mean? Stuff like equality? That’s certainly brilliant and as much as I tent to say ‘things used to be better’. They actually haven’t been, I was just younger. But I query the questions, I don’t understand, that modern values are the opposite of traditional culture

I completely agree that they’re not the opposite of traditional culture. Some traditional values have been brought through to the modern day, but many have died out in favour of modern ones. One example many people on here have brought up is texting instead of writing letters or seeing people face-to-face. Another is modern medicine. I think the question needs to be about how these can be utilised to work together.

There are good and bad in both traditional and modern culture so it is important that we identify the strengths that we want to retain; things like a sense of community and the weaknesses that we want to change like gender inequality. Modern values are constantly evolving and sometimes a change made for good reasons can have unintended bad consequences so we need to continually review whether changes have had a positive outcome or further work is needed.

I definitely agree with this. The constant evolution of values and necessity to review what’s working and what isn’t needs to be taken into account, particularly when each society can be so different. The traditional and modern values that work in one country or even neighbourhood won’t necessarily work or be valued in another.
(Anna at February 23, 2017 12:17 pm)
I think it has to be a combination of both. We can learn a lot from each other. Technology makes life easier I guess, but the traditional cultures feel trustful.
(Gabi at February 23, 2017 12:23 pm)
I think both lifestyles have good things. Nowadays, modern life makes things much easier, like travelling and communication. But I think the traditional life has good things too like being more together, because you are more depending of each other. People do things more together and share more. Nowadays, it is more individual.

Modernity allows us to communicate better by using phones instead of going physically to the place. It also brings us education.

Answered on February 21, 2017 3:04 pm
There was also more traditional education which some could argue was better as it was more practical skill based. Having sat at dinner with my teenage sons being on their phone the whole time I am not sure I buy the idea that phones have truely benifited us. Going physcially to a place connects you to another human being. Phones keep us apart from each other.
(Abraham at February 22, 2017 7:13 pm)
I agree with both of you, I think it depends on the cases. For instance, in case of distance relationships it s a good way to stay in touch with the people you love. However, phones should not become an addiction mostly in cases of children
(Irene at February 23, 2017 11:20 am)
I agree with Abraham that phones have made us become less connected with other people. Personally I would much rather have a conversation with someone face to face than over the phone.
(Amy at February 23, 2017 11:23 am)
communicating psychically is better because someone can read another person’s facial expression and see whether he or she is fine or not unlike the phone where people forge feelings.
(jimmy (uganda) at February 23, 2017 11:34 am)
I agree Jimmy. It is very hard to know how someone really feels over a phone conversation. Eventually we will end up loosing our social skills and not know how to interact with people face to face.
(Amy at February 23, 2017 11:53 am)
Modern values have simplified our communication than d traditional
(Amuza(Uganda) at February 23, 2017 11:55 am)
I agree with technology perhaps making us less good at communicating face-to-face, but don’t you think it’s good in terms of networking and staying in touch with friends when you all live in different countries?
(Anna at February 23, 2017 12:04 pm)
I think that modern values can support us to work more effectively and more broadly (overseas for example) but need to be used in collaboration with a wide range of mechanisms – such as face to face communication, telephone communication, written communication – to ensure rapport is build effectively with those we are working/engaging with. I do think modern technology can make us lazy when managing existing relationships – such as text messages and FB – whilst it is a great way to contact someone quickly, it can take out the thought and reflection you get when you write a letter, for example.
(Emma UK at February 23, 2017 12:11 pm)
modern life is better than a traditional life. Traditional life could walk on foot instead of using cars. It takes a long time to get somewhere and at a same time they are living in poor houses. During bad weather like rain, they will suffer a lot. Like now, everything is okay. This time people live in good houses.
(Jacob and Ashraf at February 23, 2017 12:25 pm)
I wants a traditional life. People do not die as much in accidents, because there are no cars. There are more vehicles to disturb you. You can move whenever you want if there are less vehicles.
(Shafique UG at February 23, 2017 12:26 pm)
I wants modern life. Now it is easy to reach every corner of the world because of the modern life. It is much easier to transport or communicate. Life is better now than before. No hurting yourself by walking on foot. You can use a plane to go to other countries.
(Mugulusi UG at February 23, 2017 12:27 pm)
its true that modernity has promoted both education and good communication because on my side, we used to ride bikes for long distances to deliver some messages but now it takes seconds although it is limiting on the strong relationship that people used to have.
(brian(uganda) at February 23, 2017 12:28 pm)
I will choose a traditional life, because there was less diseases. That has come because of modernization. Diseases like cancer, HIV and Aids. Cancer comes because people eating bad food, drinks, all that lead to lifestyle. I feel that modern life is not good. In the past people lived for many years, because the lifestyle was better. Because of good lifestyle, people do not eat bad things. They are not taking the wrong medicine etc.
(Godfrey Uganda at February 23, 2017 12:29 pm)
I don’t think it’s true that there’s more disease in modern life. Think of diseases such as the plague which killed thousands. Many diseases that would have killed millions just 100 years ago can be treated or even cured now.

This is a little off the current topic but an interesting question. Within a nation you get many people of different backgrounds, ideas, hopes and dreams. I dont think it is about what people deserve – but more that different ways of organising society have lead to different levels of inequality.
(Joanna UK at February 19, 2017 7:29 am)
I will say to a certain extent they are unequal, however we have to admit people are different and always have different interests in life but they are very good since we remain as a family communicating and sharing together.
(cranmer (uganda) at February 23, 2017 11:43 am)
yes i agree with you Joanna inequality is also brought about the different personalities among people of different nations and its not that the nations deserve the inequality.
(kuleina(uganda) at February 23, 2017 11:48 am)
Cranmer, do you think that being a close family that communicates is something that is being lost in today’s societies?
(Anna at February 23, 2017 12:18 pm)
modernity is better like in agriculture section there is use of machines ie use of tractors unlike in history peopie use local hoes where by it takes more time plough an acre of land but with machines it takes fiew hours
(francis from uganda at February 23, 2017 12:27 pm)
I agree, Francis, but do you think people lived more sustainable lives in the past by just farming for themselves and their family?
(Anna at February 23, 2017 12:52 pm)

Maybe neither are good for us? If you look at history we were not good at caring for each other and society was not equal. Then if you look at modernity today its the same. Maybe as people we just aren’t good at creating any culture that promotes equality. Maybe equality can never exist.

Religion is traditional and helps to imrpove the communities that are open to its message. Modern values are spoiling the young people and keeping them away from God.
(Muhammed at February 16, 2017 7:54 pm)
I disagree Muhammed. I think that modernity and God can exist together if we approach our religion with an open heart and mind.
(angel at February 20, 2017 7:40 pm)
Modernity n God can not be one u either follow on
(Paul (Uganda) at February 23, 2017 11:58 am)
i think modern is the best way, because the way of communication. the communication was not so good at tradition. when you are in Jinja and you need to speak with someone from mbale you can use you Phone. i think tradition is also good because, the people dressing was better. but now its not beter because young girls are not dressed properly
(denis from uganda at February 23, 2017 12:00 pm)
i disagree with the all thing of caring being attached to modern values and traditional cultures because helping someone is from someone’s willingness to offer help.
(jimmy (uganda) at February 23, 2017 12:05 pm)
i think mordernity is the best,in terms of record keeping people use computer to keep records unlike in tradition record keeping was hard they could write on stone, soil where by its hard to get Original documents
(francis from uganda at February 23, 2017 12:08 pm)
I think it is important to have structures in place that can ensure people thrive, regardless of their gender/race/etc however I do think there is a responsibility on individuals to be role-models and lead by example. We must have value driven leaders (whether that be through religion in a positive way or not) and we need to flexible to be open to change as set rules are not useful in an evolving world.
(Anonymous at February 23, 2017 12:14 pm)
i think modern is better because, the introduction of money simplified trade. in the history people trades stuff for other stuff.
(denis from uganda at February 23, 2017 12:16 pm)
Denis, don’t you think it’s better that girls are increasingly allowed to wear what they like? Whether they choose to cover themselves completely or wear shorts and t shirts, surely it’s better they have the choice than being pressured to wear something they don’t want to?
(Anna at February 23, 2017 12:29 pm)
I likes modern life. The traditional life is bad because they have to walk too much. Now there is a boda boda, vehicle, bicycle etc. The traditional people are not praying to God or Allah, but to idols or ancestors. They go to the church or to the mosque.

I think a big arguement against traditional culture is in the way women are treated. Traditionally we give them roles in the home and caring for the children and say they cant be leaders or value their opinions as much as men. So traditional ideas are holding us back as the human race in achieving our potential if we downgrade 50% of people based on gender.

Its not just gender that makes people to be put down, what about age? We dont value young people very much traditionally as we say they havent gathered all the wisdom yet. But some young people have a lot to share if we gave them a chance to be creative rather than putting into schools which turns them into robots
(Cindy (america) at February 16, 2017 7:43 pm)
Traditional values dont appear from the grass one day but are as a result of years of polishing so lets not downplay them all as being bad
(john ken at February 20, 2017 7:41 pm)
I agree with Viola
(Jo (UK) at February 22, 2017 5:06 pm)
Some traditional values around the treatment of others can be not good for helping us to improve and move forwards – for example the treatment of women as being lesser than men, or young people as being inferior to old people. If we can learn to value all people then that is a modernity I could buy into.
(Nicola (UK) at February 23, 2017 12:09 pm)
viola you are right because with modernity women are given the chance to be leaders and also go to school and we have seen great change in the society.
(ivan(uganda) at February 23, 2017 12:16 pm)
I think that traditional cultures can hold us back. The hole world is getting every day more modern so you have to follow to know what is happening.
(patricia at February 23, 2017 12:31 pm)
Patricia, do you think the world would be better if everyone embraced modern life and learned to work with it rather than against? Or should we fight to hold onto some traditional values?
(Anna at February 23, 2017 12:54 pm)
Nicola that is right but its just an understanding of cultural values n norms its not taking them to inferior that why they would sit u down to take an understanding of culture…
(Solo(Uganda) at February 23, 2017 1:00 pm)
I may or may not agree with the subject matter in that both traditional as well as modern life has brought not good thing around us but also considerable number of harm. Lets firstly consider traditional life; it’s characterised with alot of harm like everything being so sluggish and bureaucratic. It would take ages for one to travel long distances say like from Europe to Africa. On the other hand the sophisticated lifestyles resulting from mqdernisation has put life in great danger in general. Consider the invention of weapons of mass destruction like the nuclear bomb can destroy life massively! Modernisation on the positive side has made the whole world look quite small. One can now reach another in a second regardless of the distance factor. The use of cell phones, internet etc has enabled this among others. Positively as well, traditional life was quite cheaper and safer as compared to the modern life. Though slow, people would walk safely on foot, they would eat cheap and nutritious foods acquired from their on gardens, they would deliver messeges verbally without incurring costs of purchasing equipments like phones and computers etc. According to me now, although the two seem to look the same i feel that modernisation outweighs traditional life.( Godffrey in Jinja Uganda)

(Opusi(Rwanda) at February 23, 2017 12:03 pm)
I agree with Bernie, i experience it in daily life..But i think also that traditional cultures left us a huge treasure of values and considerations about life..So we can find the time to think about it and choose who we want to be and what is important for us. We can dig a little deeper inside and we will find our best heritage of values

But some of those old medicines and traditional medicines really work a lot better than the modern hospital. Modern hospitals can cheat you for a lot of money if you give the chance. I prefer traditional healing.
(Waswa Uganda at February 16, 2017 7:48 pm)
I prefer modern medicine because I don’t trust traditional medicine (although I never tried it). However, I live in a society where health care is mostly free and you don’t have to pay lots of money, so it s easier for me to access healthcare. In certain cases maybe people have just the possibility to access traditional medicine. I think everyone has the right to access modern medicine and health care without paying too much
(Irene at February 23, 2017 11:31 am)
Irene nice idea but have u ever thought about the effects of those medicines why do you think doctors have to say b careful. I would prefer tradition because when it comes to nedicine its original no chemical added.
