I think it’s important for everyone to first agree on what good values are. Everyone has different opinions and as such everyone will have different ideas about a good leader.
(Victoria South Africa at April 26, 2017 9:24 pm)
By violently overthrowing the corruptible bourgeoisie and subsequently creating a bountiful socialist utopia based upon the equitable exchange of good & labour under the dictatorship of the proletariat.
(Bolshe-Boy 1918 at April 27, 2017 9:59 am)
Bolshe boy – do violence and dictatorship show good values according to you? They dont to me.
(Albert at April 27, 2017 10:37 am)
The best way is to first know their background before they are given offices
(Brian(Uganda) at April 27, 2017 10:42 am)
put strict laws and also teach them on what they are supposed to deliver
(James(Uganda) at April 27, 2017 10:46 am)
Who should decide the strict laws James and who should police them?
(Emma UK at April 27, 2017 10:55 am)
What i know that having good dictatorship we as community we can choose good leaders .
(sesmo(uganda) at April 27, 2017 11:13 am)
if everyone can be trained to be responsible and taught the dangers of corruptions then this means the leaders will be against corruption.
(yasin(uganda) at April 27, 2017 11:51 am)
first the leaders should be taught the principles of a good leader after being elected into power because this will show them what they are supposed to do as leaders then meaning of corruption should be made known and what does it take for some to carryout corruption.
(brenda(uganda) at April 27, 2017 12:04 pm)
How do we ensure that these qualities/behaviours are monitored/continually demonstrated? Making sure our leaders are accountable for their behaviour & are provided feedback when need to improve/adjust how they’re behaving.
(Emma R UK at April 27, 2017 12:07 pm)
I should add to the above – we must make sure we do the above.
(Emma R UK at April 27, 2017 12:08 pm)
for someone to be elected as a leader should first have an experience of 5 years in leadership as this will help to find out if they have ever had cases of corruption.
(derrick(uganda) at April 27, 2017 12:18 pm)
The nation should establish anti corruption court, identify corrupt leaders and imprison them .
(Alfred at April 27, 2017 12:20 pm)
Before voting leaders in office, follow their biography from childhood, leadership positions held, investigate their strength and weaknesses when they were leaders in a particular working environment. Am sure when this is done, you will be able to know the quality of a leader you are recommending or voting into office.
(Alfred(Uganda) at April 27, 2017 12:36 pm)
Many nation-states do currently have anti-corruption institutions, but often this isn’t enough because many leaders feel as though their judgements are being watched and questioned. Is there a way of ensuring there is better communication between leaders and anti-corruption institutions so they can work together rather than enforce policies?
(Anna at April 27, 2017 12:42 pm)
How do you assess if their leadership was any good Derrick? 5 years experience is useful but 5 years bad experience is useless.
(Emma R UK at April 27, 2017 12:43 pm)
Who gets to decide the policies about corruption? And who is corrupt ffree enough to police them?
(Savage kenya at April 27, 2017 12:44 pm)
Accountability is key, ordinary people being able to hold leaders to account
(JoSheffield at April 27, 2017 1:03 pm)
How can they do this Jo? When leaders have the army and police they are accountable only to god

Do you think leadership quotas are a good idea to make sure we have equal numbers of men and women and people from different backgrounds represented?

No that is also corrupt as you can get someone not good just bcos of quota
(Savage kenya at April 27, 2017 1:00 pm)
Yes I like quotas. Until we have equality of opportunities for everyone growing up then we need quotas to make sure we develop the leadership that will improve our equality

We have to vote for people we trust and be able to change the government if it is being corrupt. Democracy is the way to go people should have power to carry out referendum

It needs people to take an oath that when they take any money for inappropriate activities they will be killed
(yusuf Uganda at April 27, 2017 11:37 am)
As people we should learn to control ourselves e should stop working with political leaders because they are corrupt because even if u report your case they first ask for money from u
(Waiswa Ug at April 27, 2017 11:55 am)
It needs real force and not being soft on those who are corrupt. It also needs the enforcers to be with strong hearts which not corrupt.
(Francis Uganda at April 27, 2017 11:59 am)
Yusuf do you not think that violence and killing people is showing bad values rather than good ones? Can you not think of a way to stop corruption that doesnt involve killing people?
(Sasha UK at April 27, 2017 12:00 pm)
Hello Joseph, what if we try to listen to Every one when they are campaigning to be able to determine who is having good values?
(Anonymous at April 27, 2017 12:21 pm)
What about if the media is biased and doesnt represent the leaders views fairly? Then it can be hard to listen to all the leaders to find out the good values.

I think we need to teach people what good leadership is. Most people are into leadership not because of passion for the cause but because of money.

If we are to chase corruption from leaders we need to teach them to love their country
(yusuf Uganda at April 27, 2017 11:27 am)
Chasing corruption needs electoral literacy where people are taught how to know good leaders
(Rogers Uganda at April 27, 2017 11:31 am)
Dealing with corruption is tricky it needs dealing with young generation teaching them good values and even the adults being good role models to them for example parents lead children to learn deception when they are young . A parent may tell a child to lie to visitors that he is not inside the house yet he is so because he wants to hide from someone here children with definitely grow with the mind that telling lie is good and when he gets a chance of leadership will end up receiving his people that he serves which is not good.
(yusuf Uganda at April 27, 2017 11:42 am)
Corruption is not only in the government and leaders it is in everyone so if we need to a way with corruption we have to work with everyone and not just leaders.
(Yasin Uganda at April 27, 2017 11:57 am)
leaders should have the principles of leadership in them
(jimmy uganda at April 27, 2017 12:03 pm)
What do you think the principles of leadership are, Jimmy?
(Anna at April 27, 2017 12:15 pm)
We need to make leadership a subject in schools.
(Anonymous at April 27, 2017 12:47 pm)
We should make more committee roles for people to learn leadership values when they are young. Then they will do it better when they are old
(Anonymous at April 27, 2017 12:47 pm)
The way we handle our children teaches them a lot. If they learn bad habbits like lying and not being trustworthy form home you can guess they grow up to do the same.

Nelson Mandela = he wasnt perfect, but he quietly kept going and never gave up
(JNR Kenya at April 20, 2017 3:00 pm)
I agree with JNR, Nelson Mandela was a good leader, even if not perfect. I believe also that Gandhi, promoting the non-violence practice, was a good leader. In general, leaders who act toward peace and non-violence are good leaders
(Irene at April 21, 2017 1:04 pm)
I honour Wangari Maathai. A mother of Kenya who planted so many trees. She showed people you can do something about deforestation. She didnt give up.
(Mary Kenya at April 26, 2017 3:53 pm)
My mother is a good leader in my family
(TOM UK at April 27, 2017 10:40 am)
I honour Rila odinga a father of democracy who can stand to talk as many people look at him ihope every one can be brave like him.
(sesmo at April 27, 2017 11:20 am)
I admire being like Obama he is so good he thought about his people and loved the nation how i wish all leaders can copy him we shall not have coruption
(matia uganda at April 27, 2017 12:09 pm)
Jacob Zuma is a good leaders because he wants his people to get equal things.
(Yasin Uganda at April 27, 2017 12:12 pm)
Nelson Mendela I like him because he fought for peace and freedom for the people which these days it is hard for one leader to fight for everyone.
(moses Uganda at April 27, 2017 12:13 pm)

Honesty for me is the thing I value most. Not a politician or leader who only ever gives half or avoidant answers. Someone I feel I can trust.
(Katie (Canada) at April 17, 2017 6:36 pm)
But Katie is anyone ever really honest? If we expect honesty all the time arent we saying that leaders have to be perfect – which noone can be and thus our leaders will all fail.
(Ash (Canada) at April 17, 2017 8:35 pm)
I like leaders who are teamplayers. They dont need to dress powerfully or be a charismatic speaker. The main thing they care about is their team and helping their team to grow.
(Warren UK at April 27, 2017 11:14 am)
By getting leaders who are trustworthy
(Nuhu Uganda at April 27, 2017 11:16 am)
Good leadership is someone willing to make sacrifices according to me. If there is a problem they know they might be the one to suffer to make things right.
(Bobbi Uk at April 27, 2017 11:19 am)
someone to be brave from what he/she is doung.
(sesmo(uganda) at April 27, 2017 11:23 am)
We need to vote leaders who are brave and inspirational
(John Uganda at April 27, 2017 11:28 am)
Not necessarily, Ash. For leaders to just be honest about when they make mistakes or what their policies will be if they enter power etc would be a good start! But no one can be perfect. The problem is that it’s often not in their best interest to be honest, so unfortunately asking politicians do so is unrealistic.
(Anna at April 27, 2017 11:32 am)
Good leadership can depend a bit on the context. You might want something different from your political leaders, compared to your sports coach or you boss at work. But there are some core values I think all good leaders should aim for. Honesty and trying to uphold ethical values. Ability to work well with a team as well as the confidence to lead when it is needed. Ability to communicate well to inspire and motivate others. Resilience to endure and overcome problems. Knowledge they are not perfect and have a lot to learn from others as well as to share with others. Integreity and commitment to the work they are doing. Creativity, positivity and being a problem solver. … Its a lot to ask of someone and noone will get it right all the time, but I think a leader who tries to embody these values is a leader who will have my respect and support.
(Nicola (UK) at April 27, 2017 11:52 am)
Leader should have principles like love and equality for all people
(Waswa Uganda at April 27, 2017 12:10 pm)
A leader should be willing to do the necessary even when it is not popular. For eaxampe to fight the climate change even if the people right now dont want to the children can feel happy
(annie France at April 27, 2017 12:16 pm)
Brilliant Nicola.
(Sam at April 27, 2017 12:24 pm)
We should have leaders who have at least five years experience in something useful before they go for leadership

I think it also depends on the people you meet along your way. It is difficult to remain ”clean” when around you there are only corrupted people. However, I do think that it is possible to still act good in situation of corruption, without falling into it.
(Anonymous at April 21, 2017 1:06 pm)
We can try our levrl best to be good and not corrupt. Leading by example is the critical part. If you are offered corruption you should report it and end it. Not think oh well everyone else is so I must also be eating.
(Moses Uganda at April 27, 2017 10:17 am)
i think it also depends on the people you meet along yoyr way.
(sesmo(uganda) at April 27, 2017 11:26 am)
I think we can have good leaders if we had perfect families where they are raised. The problems we have is that the people who are leaders today are people who are from torn familes and they have grown up and trained to manipulate. So it is very easy for them to convince people to vote for them.
(Sam Uganda at April 27, 2017 12:15 pm)
Is that true, Sam? Are leaders from torn families? I know of a few politicians who apparently come from stable, happy families. What do you think a torn family is?

We cant expect our leaders to do what we are not willing to do ourselves. So if we want good honest hard working leaders who dont steal from their office we need to make that be what everyone is valuing in society rather than the current celebrity culture which rewards wrong behaviour with attention.

Its us the people who influence the leaders to be corrupt but if we follow the rules and regulations then this will be fair.
(Brenda (Uganda) at April 6, 2017 11:27 am)
Which came first the chicken or the egg I wonder? Were the people or the leaders the corrupt ones at first?
(Darren USA at April 21, 2017 6:18 pm)
I think they’re mutually influential. A corrupt society can bring up corrupt leaders, but then the corrupt leaders continue to reinforce this when they come to power. It seems cyclical to me, so the question is whether this cycle can be broken.
