Yes, because when people steal they may be punished or killed because they’re wrong. Something like stealing a cow, bicycles, goat and others.

(Nasulu, Uganda at September 27, 2018 11:14 am)

I don’t think there’s ever any circumstances where a child should be sent to jail. If a child is commiting a crime, then there must be reasons behind it which should be looked into and the child helped out. I think it is also worth thinking about what point though you say someone is no longer a child and should be held responsible for any crimes they commit.

(Dan, UK at September 27, 2018 11:48 am)

yes, some may have committed offences so they should be sentenced to jail.

(Ibra(Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:00 pm)

It would be much better to try and rehabilitate them. Putting them in jail will teach them the wrong behaviours from the wrong types of people.

(Gabriel, France at September 27, 2018 12:00 pm)

Police shoud not sentence children to jail because it is police to give protection to everyone.

(James(Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:01 pm)

Police and government should provide jobs for youths instead of sentencing them to jail.

(James(Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:03 pm)

Yes because some children dodge to go to school so as a punishment they should be sentenced to jail such that they can change.

(Musa (Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:05 pm)

Yes because some children sniff petrol and also steal people’s property.

(Musa (Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:05 pm)

Yes because some children do not respect their elders (parents).

(Musa (Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:06 pm)

Yes because some children fight with others.

(Musa (Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:06 pm)

We need to determine an age at which young people are considered responsible for their actions. For all anti- social behaviour there needs to be consequences but these will vary depending on the age of the child and whether they are considered responsible. The consequences for younger children should not be punishment in jail but support and rehabilitation to help them move on from the original behaviour

(LIs,Uk at September 27, 2018 12:09 pm)

No, children are not supposed to be sentenced to jail because they do not know the law.

(Joseph, Uganda at September 27, 2018 12:09 pm)

Instead of putting them to jail they should give them punishments that are worth their crimes because putting them in jail just traumatizes them.

(Brenda(Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:14 pm)

Yes, youths who know the law and commit a case should be sentenced to jail. Those youths who sell or use drugs of substitance should be sentenced to jail. Also youth/children who steal property should be sentenced to jail. Police should know which age is ok to be sentenced to jail.

(Joseph, Uganda at September 27, 2018 12:17 pm)

some children should be sentenced to jail depending on the crimes they commite like committing murder

(Nelson(Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:24 pm)

No police should not imprison anybody it finds on the street

(Musa (Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:25 pm)

yes they should be jailed because there are those who pretend to be young yet they do bad things so they are to be jailed.

(King David[uganda] at September 27, 2018 12:30 pm)

children and youths should not be sentenced to jail but instead the leaders and officers need to have sentization compaingns on Televions, radios stations and workshops to help the children and youths know when they do committe a crime in any circumstance

(James(Uganda) at September 27, 2018 12:50 pm)

No, children who commit offences should receive support and rehabilitation to help them turn their lives around

Children and youths are the generation of tomorrow so sentencing them will not be the best idea to tame their character but just get them engaged in several productive activites that will help them be resourceful people in the society

(King David[uganda] at September 27, 2018 12:37 pm)

But how do you define someone as being idle? Is it just someone not active? We all need to rest sometimes. And who chooses who is of no use or some use?

(Nicola UK at September 27, 2018 12:39 pm)

Rehabilitation methods within prisons need to be reviewed. Children are easily influenced and can be encouraged to commit crime. Sending these young people to jail simply as punishment, without the right kinds of support whilst they are there, can lead to alienation and disillusionment among youth.

There may be better ways to discipline children who disobey their parents than jail. It may be the parents would need help to know how to do this though – sending them to jail seems a bit harsh.

(James, Uganda at September 27, 2018 12:06 pm)

(Nandala, Uganda at September 27, 2018 12:22 pm)

Yes, because children have bad behaviours, so they commit offences and in the long run are sentenced to jail. Some children do not want to go to school, so they are sentenced to jail by right authorities. Some children sniff petrol, you may become useless in the community. Children do not want to work and resort to street life which is not good, police finds them and sentences them to jail.

(Mustafa Uganda at September 27, 2018 11:52 am)

If they are taken to jail do you think it will change their behaviour? I am not sure that jail works for that – it just locks people away but doesn’t deal with why they did the behaviour in the first place. There should be different responses to different actions but I am not sure that jail ever really helps anyone.

(Nicola UK at September 27, 2018 11:56 am)

No, some of them are guilty.

(Swaibu, Uganda at September 27, 2018 12:03 pm)

(Masibo, Uganda at September 27, 2018 12:11 pm)

They shouldnot be jailed because they are still young and controlable they just need guidance and counseling.

(King David;[uganda] at September 27, 2018 12:21 pm)

Yes children should be jailed when they commit an offence.
