There are 2 sides to this, whether it’s for the benefit of the child or not. Some people hit their kids as a way of teaching them a lesson and the pain felt will be a reminder that they should not do the same mistake again. Secondly, it’s bad to hit kids because sometimes they develop some sense of hatred towards their parents

Hitting a child scares him/her from the parent and whenever they see you they will always think you are going to hit them again and the child lives in fear and ends up running to the streets.
(Sadat (Uganda) at April 26, 2018 12:03 pm)
It is wrong because the person hitting the child may not be having any clues about them and the challenges they are going through and it may be based on false accusations.

I don’t believe it’s right under any circumstance as this only teaches a child to be scared and not the difference between right and wrong.

(Robert-[Uganda] at April 26, 2018 11:51 am)
I don’t think any problem should be solved by resolving to violence so if the child does not listen to their parents, this should also be resolved with a non-violent solution ie. disciplining in other ways or if this problem does not get better, seeing a GP/specialist.
(Danielle (UK) at April 26, 2018 11:54 am)

I do not believe children should be hit in any circumstance as it can make children afraid of adults, and that will damage any relationship a child has with an adult for the rest of their lives.

hitting only makes a child to have fear as he or she thinks that anything he does is just going to be hit. and thus making a child to have low self esteem since he cant explain him self on the offense he has committed.
(brenda(uganda) at April 26, 2018 12:36 pm)
But it depends on how one can perceive it. So children take it easy while others feel bad with it.

I think it shouldn’t be OK .But I can imagine tricky situations for adults to handle. Imagining my child runs into a busy street with traffic. I would be scared and overwhelmed and could respond in fight/flight style.

I was smacked as a child and do believe that in some circumstances a quick not too hard smack can help – for example if it keeps your child out of danger.

Replace “child” with any other social group and people would be outraged. Human right to go about life without threat of physical violence is not a debate.

That would be a criminal offence in the UK and I agree with that. There shouldn’t be a situation that cannot be resolved peacefully or with restraining action rather than striking.

No one has a right to hit a child because no child deserves pain on him or her
(Solo(Uganda) at April 17, 2018 9:19 am)
I think hitting should be defined well because i can hit a child with words in a way of disciplining the child so i believe it depends on how one is hitting.
(Aphan(Kenya) at April 17, 2018 9:29 am)
Children are people. We care for them and love them and guide them, but we do not own them. And we do not have the right to ‘do whatever we like’ with them.
(Omo(Kenya) at April 17, 2018 9:35 am)
I think the first step to breaking the cycle is to acknowledge that you do not have the right to hit your child. You simply must commit to a different way of parenting. Children absolutely do not need punishment in order to learn. They need unconditional love and acceptance.
(Solo(Uganda) at April 17, 2018 9:42 am)
They prefer being talked to instead of just being hit
(Dan(Uganda) at April 26, 2018 12:10 pm)
hitting just scares away a child and this might lead a child to run to the streets instead
(brenda(uganda) at April 26, 2018 12:17 pm)
After all hitting a child is not the only way of correcting or teaching them, so no one should take advantage of children.
(Sarah Uganda at April 26, 2018 12:36 pm)
No one has a right to hit a child reason children have rights of not to be hit by any one if it is done, then there should be clear reasons as to why such a child is to be hit.
